Faculty inauguration of the academic year 2026/2027

Welcome to the 2026/2027 Academic Year at FMPI!

On October 8th, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., the Opening Ceremony of the 2026/2027 Academic Year at the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics began in lecture halls 1.14 and 1.15 at the Institute of Informatics.

The ceremony was hosted by Dr Marta Frankowska.

The event opened with the National Anthem of the Republic of Poland, performed by the University of Gdańsk Academic Choir, followed by a formal welcome to the invited guests and an inaugural address by the Dean of FMPI, dr. hab. Marcin Marciniak, prof. UG. Representing the University authorities, the Vice-Rector for Cooperation and Internationalisation, dr hab. Anna Maria Jurkowska-Zeidler, prof. UG, also addressed the audience. Both speeches were uplifting, inspiring new students to grow and learn while offering words of encouragement for any moments of doubt they may encounter in the future.

The ceremony was attended by authorities of other faculties of the University of Gdańsk: dr. hab. Wojciech Pokora, prof. UG (Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Biology); dr hab. Beata Grobelna, prof. UG (Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry); dr. hab. Leszek Czerwonka, prof. UG (Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Economics); dr hab. Joanna Jereczek-Lipińska, prof. UG (Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Languages); dr. hab. Arkadiusz Janicki, prof. UG (Dean of the Faculty of History); prof. dr. hab. Michał Harciarek (Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences); dr hab. Katarzyna Smolarz, prof. UG (Dean of the Faculty of Oceanography and Geography); dr Sabina Nowak (Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Management); and dr. hab. Mariusz Grinholc, prof. UG (Vice-Dean of the Intercollegiate Faculty of Biotechnology of the University of Gdańsk and the Medical University of Gdańsk).

Representatives of our partner institutions and companies also attended the ceremony.

The next part of the event featured the presentation of postdoctoral diplomas to dr hab. Anita Dąbrowska and dr. hab. Rafał Lutowski. This was followed by the formal doctoral degree conferral ceremony. Vice-Rector Anna Jurkowska-Zeidler conferred doctoral degrees upon the new doctors: dr Karolina Baranowska, dr Sumit Rout, dr Chithra Raj, dr Gerardo Jose Suárez Rodriguez, dr Tushita Prasad and dr Paweł Cieśliński.

With our students in mind, we invited representatives of the student community from three different groups to share their experiences and perspectives. We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks for their wonderful contributions:

  • Jakub Susoł, for representing the DeepDive Student Research Club - the second-best student research club at the University of Gdańsk and the organisation behind, among other initiatives, the Depression Control App;
  • Maja Zontek, for her formal presentation of the Faculty Student Council;
  • Stanisław Chełkowski, for introducing new students to the opportunities available to them to develop their potential through activities both within and beyond the University.

Following the student oath, recited by the students with the assistance of Vice-Dean dr Justyna Strankowska, it was time for the inaugural lecture, entitled “Science in the Age of AI: Will We Stay on the Wave?”. We are grateful to dr Bartosz Naskręcki, Vice-Dean for Development and International Cooperation at the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics of Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, for this fascinating presentation.

In the afternoon, Integration Day took place, organised by the FMPI Student Council. The program included presentations by the Faculty's student research clubs, a lecture entitled “How to Survive University? Essential Information about FMPI and UG”, a speed-friending session, and “Campus Party”, an event held at the University of Gdańsk Main Library.

Every beginning marks not only a new chapter but, above all, brings together the people who give it meaning. We would like to thank everyone who joined us, shared this special moment and made it truly meaningful through their presence.

May the energy of this day, our mutual kindness and the courage to take on new challenges stay with us throughout the academic year. We believe that the most wonderful things happen when we are united by shared values, passion and the belief that together we can achieve more.

This is only the beginning of a wonderful journey. Thank you for being part of it!
